Privacy Policy

Where does this Policy apply?

This Privacy Policy applies to the Translate AI application for iPhone and iPad (the “App”), which is owned and operated by Maxima Apps (“Maxima Apps”, “we”, “us” or “our”), and to any support pages for the App. Maxima Apps is the controller responsible for the personal information described in this Policy. It explains what information we collect, how we use and share it, how long we keep it, and the choices and rights available to you. The App does not offer registration or login, and you can use it without creating an account. By using the App, you acknowledge that you have read this Privacy Policy.

In what circumstances do we obtain the information from the user and how it is used?

We collect information only to the extent needed to provide the App’s translation features, keep the App secure and working properly, manage subscriptions and, where you allow it, measure the performance of our advertising. We obtain information when you submit content for translation, when you grant a device permission, when you make a purchase, and automatically when you use the App. We do not ask for your name, email address, telephone number or password, and we do not create user accounts.

Information you give us

You choose to give us certain information when you use the App. This includes:

Content you translate. This includes text you type or paste, speech you dictate, photos you take or select, PDF pages you select, and the turns of a Conversation. When you use an online feature, this content is sent to our server hosted on Google Cloud Functions and is processed by Google Gemini, our third-party artificial intelligence provider, to return the translation and, where Smart Suggestions is enabled, examples, synonyms, dictionary entries, tone and pronunciation. No name, account or device identifier is attached to these requests.

Photos and PDF pages. For online photo and PDF translation, the photo (converted to grayscale and compressed) or the rendered PDF page is uploaded to temporary Google Firebase Cloud Storage so that our server can pass it to Google Gemini. The App deletes the file as soon as the translation is returned, and any file that remains is deleted automatically within 24 hours.

Text to be read aloud. When you choose to hear a translation, the text, language, voice and speed settings are sent to Google Cloud Text-to-Speech to create the audio.

Device permissions. To use certain features, the App asks for access to device features. We only request access that is strictly necessary for the feature you are using, and iOS asks for your permission before access is granted:

  • Camera, for camera translation, Live Scanner, and the iPhone Duo guest-facing display. Live Scanner recognises text on your device; when you are online, only the recognised text is sent for translation, never the camera image. On iPhone Duo, the front camera is switched on only while the guest display is active; the App does not capture, store or transmit those camera frames.

  • Microphone and Speech Recognition, for voice input and Conversation. Speech is converted to text by Apple’s speech recognition service, and Apple may process the audio on its servers under Apple’s privacy policy. In offline Auto Conversation, recognition takes place on your device where the language supports it. We do not receive, record or store your audio, only the resulting text.

  • Photo Library, to save an image from the image viewer to your Photos. Photos you translate are chosen through Apple’s system picker, which gives the App only the photo you select.

  • Notifications, to send you tips, updates and offers.

You may revoke any permission at any time in your device’s Settings without affecting features that do not require it.

Files. PDF files are imported through your device’s system file picker. No storage permission is requested, and the App receives only the file you select.

Information we receive from others

In addition to the information you provide directly, we receive information from the following sources:

Apple. When you buy a subscription or other in-app purchase, payment is processed by Apple. Apple does not provide us with your name, email address or payment details. We receive the product purchased, price, currency, purchase and renewal dates, and transaction identifiers so we can provide Pro access.

Apple Search Ads. Through Apple’s AdServices framework, we receive information about whether the App was installed from one of our Apple Search Ads campaigns, such as the campaign, ad group and keyword. If you allow tracking, Apple may include additional detail, such as the date you tapped the ad.

Qonversion. Our subscription management provider gives us your subscription status, the result of receipt validation, and which version of our subscription screen you were shown.

Advertising partners. Where we run advertising campaigns, our partners, such as Meta, may give us reports about how those campaigns performed.

Information collected when you use our services

When you use the App, we collect information about how you use it and about the device you use. This includes:

Anonymous identifier. When you first open the App, Google Firebase Authentication creates a random anonymous user ID. We use it to store your subscription status and purchase records in Google Cloud Firestore and to identify your subscription with Qonversion. This identifier is not linked to your name, email address or Apple ID.

Usage information. Through Google Firebase Analytics, we collect information about your activity in the App, such as when the App is opened, the features you use, translations started, subscription screens viewed and settings changed.

Device information. We collect a Firebase installation identifier, device model, operating system and App version, language, and your approximate location at country or city level, which Firebase derives from your IP address. We do not store your IP address.

Diagnostic information. Google Firebase Crashlytics collects crash logs, and Google Firebase Performance Monitoring collects App start-up and network timing data, so we can fix errors and improve performance.

Notification token. If you allow notifications, Firebase Cloud Messaging issues a token that is stored on your device and used to deliver notifications.

Advertising identifier. On Apple devices, access to your device’s advertising identifier (IDFA) requires your consent through the App Tracking Transparency prompt. Only if you allow tracking does the Meta SDK send Meta your advertising identifier, device information, App installs and opens, and purchase events (product, price and currency). If you do not allow tracking, the Meta SDK does not send this information.

Information stored on your device. Your translation history, bookmarks, saved conversations, downloaded offline languages and settings are stored only on your device and are not sent to our servers. Device backups, such as iCloud Backup, are controlled by Apple and by you.

On-device processing. Live Scanner, and photo, PDF and conversation translation in offline mode, are processed entirely on your device using Apple Vision, Apple speech recognition and Google ML Kit. Only the download of offline language models is requested from Google.

We do not collect your name, email address, telephone number, contacts, GPS location, health or biometric information, or browsing history, and we do not access your photo library or files beyond the items you select.

Free and Pro versions

The App is available as a free version with daily usage limits and as a paid Pro version. The information we collect is largely the same for both, with the following differences.

Free version. To apply daily limits on translations, characters, voice inputs and conversation turns, the App counts your usage. These counters are stored on your device. Photo translation, PDF translation and offline translation are not available in the free version, so no photos or PDF pages are uploaded by free users.

Pro version. When you purchase Pro, a subscription or a one-day pass, we receive and store the purchase information described above under your anonymous identifier, so that we can provide and restore your Pro access. Pro users can use online photo and PDF translation, in which images are uploaded to temporary storage and processed by Google Gemini as described above, and offline translation, which runs entirely on your device.

We do not use your information differently based on whether you pay, other than to provide the features of the version you use. Choosing the free version, or declining any optional permission, does not result in additional data being collected about you.

Apple App Store Privacy Disclosures

We disclose the categories of data the App collects on its App Store product page, as required by Apple. The data types disclosed reflect only what the App actually collects and are consistent with this Privacy Policy. No data category is declared on the App Store unless it is also described in this Policy.

How we use information

The main reason we use your information is to deliver and improve the App. We also use it to keep the App secure, to communicate with you and, with your permission, to measure our advertising.

To provide our services to you

We use the content you submit to translate it and to provide Smart Suggestions, voice, camera, PDF and Conversation features. We use your anonymous identifier and purchase information to apply free usage limits, provide and restore Pro access, and respond to support requests.

To improve our services

We use usage, device and diagnostic information to understand how features are used, fix crashes and errors, improve performance, develop new features, and test different versions of our subscription screen.

To communicate with you

With your permission, we send notifications about tips, new features, updates and offers. You can turn off notifications at any time in Settings > Translate AI > Notifications on your device.

To measure our advertising

We use Apple Search Ads attribution to understand which of our Apple Search Ads campaigns lead to installs. Only if you allow tracking, we use the Meta SDK to measure which of our advertisements on Facebook and Instagram lead to installs and purchases.

To prevent, detect and fight fraud or other illegal or unauthorised activities

We use technical information to protect our server and providers from abuse, to prevent misuse of free limits and subscriptions, and to secure the App.

To ensure legal compliance

We use information to comply with legal requirements, including tax and accounting obligations, to respond to lawful requests from authorities, and to enforce or exercise our rights.

Legal bases

Where data protection law requires a legal basis for processing your information, we rely on the following.

Performance of a contract. Most of the time, we process your information to provide the App and the features you request, including processing by our third-party AI provider, which is necessary to deliver the translation you ask for, and managing your subscription.

Legitimate interests. We process usage, device and diagnostic information to keep the App working, improve it, measure Apple Search Ads campaigns and prevent abuse, where these interests are not overridden by your rights.

Consent. We rely on your consent for sending notifications and for tracking through the App Tracking Transparency prompt. You may withdraw consent at any time in your device’s Settings.

Legal obligation. We process information where we need to comply with the law.

Use of artificial intelligence

Translations and Smart Suggestions are generated by Google’s Gemini models. When you use an online translation feature, the content you submit is processed by Google, as our third-party artificial intelligence provider, solely to generate the result you requested. Our server does not store your content after returning the translation, although Google Cloud may keep basic request logs, without the content, for up to 30 days. Under Google’s paid API terms, Google does not use this content to train its models but may retain it for a limited period to detect abuse, as described in the Gemini API terms.

AI-generated translations may be inaccurate or incomplete. We recommend that you do not submit sensitive documents, such as medical, financial or identity documents, unless you are comfortable with this processing. If you prefer that your content is not processed by a third party, you may use offline translation, which runs entirely on your device.

Advertising, SDKs and opting out

An SDK is a piece of computer code that app developers include in their apps to provide functions such as analytics, crash reporting or advertising measurement. The App includes SDKs from Google Firebase, Google ML Kit, Qonversion and Meta. The App does not currently display third-party advertisements.

We use the Meta SDK only to measure the effectiveness of our own advertising campaigns on Facebook and Instagram, and only if you allow tracking. We use Apple’s AdServices framework, through Qonversion, to measure our Apple Search Ads campaigns. Apple Search Ads attribution comes from Apple, is not combined with data from other companies, and works without your advertising identifier.

You can opt out of tracking at any time in Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking. You can control whether Apple personalises the Apple Search Ads you see in Settings > Privacy & Security > Apple Advertising. Please note that Apple may change how these settings work at any time.

App Tracking Transparency (ATT) — Apple devices

When you first open the App, Apple’s App Tracking Transparency prompt asks whether Translate AI may track you. If you allow tracking, Meta may link your device’s advertising identifier and App events with data from apps and websites owned by other companies, so that we can measure which of our advertisements led to installs and purchases. If you do not allow tracking, the Meta SDK does not send your information, your advertising identifier is not accessed, and no tracking as defined by Apple takes place. The App works in the same way whichever option you choose, and your choice can be changed at any time in Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking.

Is our exact location tracked?

No. The App does not request access to your device’s location services and does not collect GPS or other precise location data. Google Firebase derives your approximate location, at country or city level, from your IP address for analytics purposes only.

Do you share our details with third parties?

We do not sell your personal information, and we do not share it with data brokers. We share information only as described below.

Service providers. We share information with service providers that process it on our behalf and under our instructions: Google Cloud, for our server, Gemini artificial intelligence, Text-to-Speech and ML Kit language model downloads (Google Privacy Policy); Google Firebase, for analytics, crash reporting, performance monitoring, the anonymous identifier, subscription records, temporary image storage and notifications (Firebase privacy information); and Qonversion, for subscription management, subscription screen testing and Apple Search Ads attribution (Qonversion Privacy Policy).

We require our service providers to use your information only to provide services to us, and to protect it with safeguards that provide the same or equal protection as described in this Privacy Policy and as required by Apple’s App Review Guidelines.

Apple. Apple provides speech recognition, payment processing, notifications and Apple Search Ads attribution under its own privacy policy.

Meta. If you allow tracking, Meta receives information as an independent controller for advertising measurement under its own privacy policy.

Legal requirements and business transfers. We may disclose information where required by law or by a valid request from a public authority, to detect or prevent fraud, or to protect the rights, property or safety of Maxima Apps, our users or others. If Maxima Apps is involved in a merger, acquisition or sale of assets, information may be transferred as part of that transaction, and this Privacy Policy will continue to apply.

International transfers. Our server runs in Google Cloud’s us-central1 region in the United States, and our service providers may process information in the United States and other countries. Where the General Data Protection Regulation or UK data protection law applies, we rely on adequacy decisions, the EU–US Data Privacy Framework for certified providers, or Standard Contractual Clauses to protect your information.

Data retention policy

We keep information only for as long as necessary for the purposes described in this Policy. Content sent for translation is not stored by our server after the response is returned; basic request logs, without the content, are kept for up to 30 days. Photos and PDF pages uploaded to temporary storage are deleted after translation and in any case within 24 hours. Subscription records are kept while your subscription is active and afterwards for as long as required by tax and accounting law. Firebase Analytics data is kept for 14 months and crash reports for 90 days. Information received by Meta is kept in accordance with Meta’s own retention policy. Information stored on your device remains there until you delete it or delete the App.

Access to personal data

Because the App does not use accounts, most of your information, including your translation history, bookmarks and saved conversations, is stored only on your device. You can delete individual items, or all items, from History and Bookmarks at any time, and you can delete downloaded offline languages. Deleting the App removes this information and the anonymous identifier from your device. To access or delete information held on our servers or by our service providers, please contact us. Because the App does not ask who you are, please include the Apple order ID from your App Store purchase receipt if you purchased Pro, your device model, and the approximate dates you used the App, so that we can locate your information. Analytics and diagnostic data are not linked to your identity, so we may be unable to locate them; if we cannot identify your information, we will tell you.

Your choices

You can control how your information is collected and used in the following ways:

  • Device permissions: you may deny or withdraw camera, microphone, speech recognition, photo library or notification access at any time in Settings > Translate AI. Only the features that require that permission will stop working.

  • Smart Suggestions: you may turn AI insights on or off in the App’s Settings.

  • Notifications: you may turn off notifications at any time in Settings > Translate AI > Notifications on your device.

  • Tracking: you may allow or deny tracking at any time in Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking.

  • Apple Advertising: you may control personalised Apple Search Ads in Settings > Privacy & Security > Apple Advertising.

  • Offline translation: Pro users may translate offline so that content is not sent off the device.

  • History and Bookmarks: you may delete individual items or all items at any time.

  • Subscription: you may cancel your subscription at any time in Settings > your Apple ID name > Subscriptions.

Data from children

The App is not directed to children under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. Users below the age of digital consent in their country, and users in India under the age of 18, should use the App only with the consent of a parent or legal guardian. If you believe that a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us and we will delete it.

Protecting Data

We protect your information against loss, destruction, unauthorised access, modification or disclosure by implementing appropriate technical and organisational measures. Information is encrypted in transit, access to our server is restricted to the genuine App using Firebase App Check, temporary images are deleted automatically, and access to analytics and subscription data is limited to personnel who need it. However, no method of transmission over the Internet or electronic storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. Where required by law, we will notify you and the relevant authorities of a data breach.

Your rights

We want you to be in control of your information and aware of your privacy rights. Depending on where you live, you may have some or all of the following rights in relation to your personal information:

  • Access: you may request access to your personal information and receive a copy of it.

  • Correction: you may have inaccurate or incomplete personal information corrected.

  • Object to, limit or restrict use of data: you may ask us to stop using all or some of your personal information, or to limit our use of it.

  • Deletion: you may ask us to delete your personal information, unless we must keep it to comply with a legal obligation.

  • Portability: you may request a copy of your personal information in a structured, machine-readable format.

  • Consent management: where we rely on your consent, you may withdraw it at any time, without giving a reason.

To exercise any of these rights, please contact us at the address below and include the details described under Access to personal data. We will respond within 30 days, or sooner where applicable law requires. For your protection, we may need to verify your request before acting on it. We may refuse a request where it is unlawful or would infringe the rights and freedoms of another person.

Your rights under GDPR (EEA, UK and Switzerland residents)

If you are located in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, you have the right of access, the right to rectification, the right to erasure, the right to restrict processing, the right to data portability, the right to object to processing based on legitimate interests, and the right to withdraw consent at any time without affecting the lawfulness of processing before its withdrawal. We do not make decisions that produce legal or similarly significant effects about you based solely on automated processing. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection supervisory authority.

Your rights under CCPA/CPRA (California residents)

In the preceding 12 months, we have collected the following categories of personal information: identifiers, such as the anonymous user ID, Firebase installation identifier and, with your permission, the advertising identifier; commercial information, such as subscription purchases; internet or other electronic network activity information, such as App usage, crash and performance data; approximate geolocation derived from your IP address; and audio or visual information you submit, such as photos and PDF pages. We collect this information from you and your device for the purposes described in How we use information.

We do not sell personal information. If you allow tracking, the disclosure of your advertising identifier and App events to Meta may be considered sharing for cross-context behavioural advertising under California law. You can opt out of such sharing by selecting “Ask App Not to Track” in Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking, or by emailing us with “Do Not Share” in the subject line. We do not use sensitive personal information to infer characteristics about you.

If you are a California resident, you have the right to know what personal information we have collected about you, the right to delete it, the right to correct it, the right to opt out of its sale or sharing, the right to limit the use of sensitive personal information, and the right not to be discriminated against for exercising these rights. You may designate an authorised agent to make a request on your behalf.

Other jurisdictions

India. Under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023, you have the right to obtain a summary of the personal data we process, to request its correction, completion, updating or erasure, to nominate another person to exercise your rights in the event of death or incapacity, and to withdraw consent as easily as it was given. Our Grievance Officer can be contacted at feedback@maximaapps.com, and we respond to grievances within 30 days. If you are not satisfied with our response, you may complain to the Data Protection Board of India.

Other United States states. Residents of Colorado, Connecticut, Virginia, Texas, Oregon and other states with similar laws have rights comparable to those described above, including the right to appeal our decision on a request by replying to that decision.

Additional privacy rights may apply under the laws of your country, state or region. We will honour applicable legal requirements. Please contact us to enquire about rights specific to your jurisdiction.

Changes to this Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time to reflect changes in our practices or in applicable law. When we make changes, we will revise the “Updated” date at the top of this page. Where the changes are material, we will notify you in the App and, where required by law, ask for your consent again.
